The Great Gatsby & an Art Deco inspired wedding

The release of Baz Lurhmann’s latest movie The Great Gatsby has seen 1920s inspiration popping up everywhere in wedding world. And today I’m going to join in because, although I wouldn’t say I’m in love with all things vintage, I definitely have a massive soft spot for the Art Deco era.

A visual feast

I saw the film on the first night of its release and, as well as thoroughly enjoying the storyline (of which I knew nothing about!), I couldn’t help but be in total awe at how amazing it all looked!

Lurhmann’s wife, Catherine Martin, was the costume and set designer and what an incredible job that must have been. A job she executed beautifully no less. On several occasions I found myself dreaming about how the dress Carey Mulligan was sporting would make an ideal wedding gown!

Divine dresses

I’ve rounded up a few pictures to show you some of the dresses she dons in the movie, but these images aren’t quite like seeing them on screen so, if you haven’t caught the film yet, I suggest you do :)

The look

And here’s my take on the Gatsby-inspired wedding trend. I’ve collected a few images that could inspire a spectacular wedding. Sure, you can do Art Deco in a more understated way, but in my opinion this is one look where you can go all out with the glitz and glamour. So, why not?!

I don’t imagine I’ll ever have a wedding inspired by decades past, but if I did, I’d love it to look like this!

The photos

For any photos taken at an Art Deco inspired wedding, these frames I created for my business of Alp & Ash, would work wonderfully…

There’s also an Art-Nouveau-inspired frame for those inspired by that beautiful era…

Wedding inspiration : 1960s vintage shoot in Paris

Not that there’s any way of me truly working out the correct percentage, but if I was to hazard a guess I’d say there’s a 99% chance of me not eloping. I just don’t think I could give up the chance to put some crafty skills into action, and have all my friends and family party with me on the day I get wed to the one I love.

But there’s still that 1% that adores the idea of eloping. Just the two of you sharing the most magical day.

Shoots like this 1960s inspired one in Paris, styled by Sarah of Classic Bride and photographed by Juliane Berry, show just how romantic it could be. Imagine getting married in the city of love and then having a photographer capture some gorgeous images of you, before enjoying the rest of the day and night together, just the two of you, as a newly married couple.

I imagine that’s something special :)

Handmade Weddings weekend at Bedruthan, Cornwall

When I get married I’m just going to see it as a huge excuse to hit up Hobbycraft and go craft crazy! Obviously it won’t be as important as marrying ‘the one’… but the chance to craft is a pretty close second ;)

For those brides-to-be that want to add handcrafted touches to their wedding, but perhaps need a little help, the ‘Handmade Weddings’ weekend, 17th-19th May, at the Bedruthan hotel in Cornwall could be what you need.

Handmade Wedding Weekends at Bedruthan Cornwall

Here’s more info on a weekend where you’ll get to make jewellery and bunting for your big day…

Guests can Bring along a memento – maybe their Grandma’s brooch, the family pearls, or a little lace from their mum’s wedding dress perhaps, and re-make them into a headdress, necklace, cuff or ring. Expert jewellery upcycler Sarah Drew will provide plenty of vintage lace, old brooches, earrings, silk flowers and crystals from her own collection too, so they can create a really eclectic handmade look.

Even complete beginners will finish the weekend with pieces they’ll be proud to wear on their walk down the aisle. And bridesmaids, mothers-of-the-bride and friends can also come along and make lovely jewellery to co-ordinate with their outfits.

Learn how to choose bunting fabrics so that they ‘read’ well when displayed, create different effects using shape and spacing and make beautiful, quality bunting that will last a lifetime. Fast stitchers can also learn how to make matching wedding cake and car bunting using left over scraps.

Stunning wedding headpieces by Olivia

A press release from
Olivia landed amongst my emails last week and I was instantly smitten.

Based in Vancouver, where designer Sandra now lives with her husband, these handmade pieces are stunning and would complete any bride’s wedding look.

When Sandra was a little girl living in Mexico she’d spend hours at her grandmother’s place. A renowned dressmaker, her grandmother had a studio full of gorgeous fabrics and lovely laces to explore which I imagine played a part in Sandra’s love of them today.

The company is, fittingly, named after her grandmother :)
