Wish upon a lantern

There are many things to remember when planning your wedding. But a big one for me is not to forget your guests! And I don’t mean that you must remember the favours. Most guests would probably not even notice if they didn’t have a little gift beside their plate as they sat down to eat. But what they will remember is if they were bored!

So entertaining your guests is a must. Wedding receptions can be long events and sometimes (along with the meal, drinking and dancing) something for the guests to participate in is a nice touch.

Sky lighting

Sky lanterns are one of those mini events that can add that touch of unique (not to mention pretty) to your wedding. The lanterns that Skycandle (based in North Yorkshire) sell are like miniature hot air balloons at just over a metre tall that, when lit, float up into the air and burn for about 12 minutes reaching about a mile high. When they burn out the sky lantern will fall to the ground and as the material is biodegradable they won’t damage the environment.

If you read my I like lights post then you may know I’m a big fan of lights and therefore sky lanterns would be a pretty perfect addition to my wedding. I, and I’m sure many of your guests, would be quite content to watch these beautiful balloons of light hover up into the sky.

Wishes & worries

You could even get everyone involved by having people write on the lanterns before releasing them. In Northern Thailand sky lanterns (or Khoom Loy to the natives) are used year around in festivals and for special occasions as the lanterns are believed to be symbolic of your problems and worries floating away. So get your guests to write their worries on the lanterns before letting them go.

Alternatively, they could write down their hopes for the newly married couple.

The newlyweds could similarly write down their hopes for the marriage or send messages to lost loved ones, unable to share their special day, as some believe these lanterns symbolise messages being sent to heaven.

Skycandles

The lanterns can be used day or night but personally I think they make much more of an impact at night. And any venue where you can go outdoors to release them is suitable. Lanterns would complement a beach event particularly well. Add some fires on the beach for guests to sit round whilst watching the lanterns float away and you have one memorable moment! Whatever venue you choose it perhaps is best to check you are allowed to incorporate this idea into your day before buying.

Lights & lighters

These floating lights look breathtaking in huge amounts and wedding packs are available including enough lighters to go around:

  • 20 sky candles & 10 lighters = £45
  • 40 sky candles & 20 lighters = £79.60
  • 60 sky candles & 30 lighters = £99
  • 100 sky candles & 50 lighters = £146

You can save yourself some money if you’re not too concerned about having a lighter per 2 guests though. For example without the lighters a pack of 100 sky candles is £127. Obviously a downside is them taking longer to get lit if there are less lighters to go around so bear this in mind if you go for large numbers and want a shot such as those featured in this post!

Skycandles

Also don’t worry if you can’t afford a lantern for everyone. If you like the idea but you can’t fit these into your budget then just buy enough for the wedding party or even just the bride and groom. It will still be a welcome feature for your wedding.

Skycandle provides all the info you need to light up your event with these lovely lanterns, including those important safety precautions.

Low down lighting

Floor lantern

And they also sell stunning floor lanterns. Add a simple tealight (huge bags are so cheap, try IKEA or a pound shop) and dot them around your venue. Inside or out would work and then there you have it… lovely lighting to create that wedding-perfect romantic atmosphere.

Treelight

Today I have something for wedding guests on the hunt for a lovely and original present for the happy couple. I am a huge fan of handcrafted work. It’s much more impressive than machine made goods from big companies. And if you buy handmade there’s a better chance of nobody else getting the couple the same gift! Etsy has a whole host of beautifully handcrafted products and in Daydreem Designs’ shop I found some gorgeous glass. Started by Michael and his fiancé Aimee, Daydreem Designs offers stunning etched glass entirely engraved by hand.

Fancy flutes

I think these champagne flutes featuring branches topped off with tiny hearts are just perfect for a wedding present:

One each for the bride and groom to toast their happy ever after. And you could always throw in a bottle of champers too!

This stunning design also appears on wine glasses and votive holders that would look lovely glowing in the centre of wedding reception tables:

Bold branches

Or if you love the trees but think the hearts are a touch too quaint how about going for glassware etched with striking branches?

I love the way the below votive holder sends shards of shadow across the table. Would look superb in a wintery wedding!

Four seasons

Then there’s these amazing candle holders that have a different seasonal display of tree with each turn. You could buy some for home and rotate according to what the leaves on the trees are doing!

Frosted flakes

And finally, for a wedding in snow season, I adore these snowflake holders:

Votives this pretty could be bought for creating an awesome atmosphere at your reception venue and double up as favours. Just let each guest take one home at the end of the night. A great way to get romantic lighting and stay within your budget!

I like lights

This is actually the sentence my boyfriend chooses to mimic my Northern accent. Apparently it comes out ‘I laak laats’. I don’t believe him but I do like lights and do say it often. In fact I love them and have fairy lights in my bedroom all year round: a set with shades of blue twine lanterns hanging from my bookcase and a set placed in a fish bowl which looks really rather pretty. And when it comes to Christmas the tree gets over 600 of them!

Lots of lights

Anyway, I believe lighting is really important at weddings. Rather than have bright lighting at a venue I think it’s far nicer to create a much more romantic setting with the use of softer lighting such as paper lanterns, fairy lights, chandeliers, projected lighting and candles for those places that allow it. Even sparklers, although only alight for a short time, offer attractive illumination which can look amazing if captured on camera (I’ve seen some awesome images of this which I’ll post at a later date).

My love of lighting may well pop up on several occasions on this blog but today I am just going to focus on paper lanterns. Apparently these lights were initially used by the Chinese to ward off bad spirits. Although they’re now mainly just used for decoration it couldn’t hurt if they did really work in warding off bad spirits at your own wedding right? Magical powers or not I love these papery balls of light and have collected a few images to show you how pretty they can look:

Awesome images courtesy of:

I love all these images but especially like the cluster of different shaped lanterns hanging from a tree just above the couple’s first dance: beautiful. And the last one looks like a piece of art, a truly awesome image.

Lantern Ideas

  1. If you’re unsure of what lantern colour and type to use for your wedding play it safe and opt for white round lanterns
  2. Match the lanterns to your theme colour
  3. If you’re having a colourful wedding go for colourful  lanterns. You don’t have to stick to one colour.
  4. Space them apart on a string (image 2)
  5. Cluster them in key points at your venue such as above the tables or the dance floor (image 9)
  6. Choose different shapes in the same colour (also seen in image 9)
  7. Cover the entire ceiling with them (not cheap but very pretty)
  8. Pick battery operated ones to save having those messy wires everywhere
  9. You don’t need to stick to the simple lanterns. If you like them and can find them why not go for something fancier such as those in image 5. And if you can find them please let me know where so I can share!
  10. I think they would even look good on the floor such as lining the aisle (they don’t necessarily have to be lit to offer decoration) or surrounding the dance floor

The Hanging Lantern Company

For the simpler lanterns I’ve discovered a company called The Hanging Lantern Company. I contacted them and a lovely lady called Aimee let me know more about the company:

The Hanging Lantern Company is the UK’s leading supplier of high quality paper lanterns and Chinese lantern accessories. We are the UK arm of The Paper Lantern Store in the US and the great thing is, we actually own our own factory in China!

Here are some more facts:

  • They hold approximately 100,00 lanterns in stock at any one time!
  • They stock oval, round and kiwi lanterns.
  • They have sizes from 8″ lanterns to 20″ ones, the next shipment from the factory will also contain lanterns up to 48″ in diameter.
  • The lanterns are available in fuchsia, white, ivory, turquoise, lime green, yellow, orange, red and black. They also have a few styles of lantern in baby pink, brown and silver. The next shipment contains lilac and dark purple lanterns.
  • They offer Nylon hanging lanterns to ensure the British weather does not get the better of you and your celebrations!
  • They work closely with a professional lighting company should customers want their lanterns installed.

Aimee also informed me that paper lanterns have appeared in lots of films and so I decided to track down a couple of images for you:

The Time Traveller’s Wife (I thought the book was better –nice lanterns though!)

The Time Traveller's Wife

Twilight (I do not understand the Pattinson attraction. But I do want a dance floor like this at my wedding)

Twilight

The Hanging Lantern Company are also due to offer a rental package available from the end of 2010 hopefully making it even easier to afford these pretty bubbles of light at your own wedding.
