Posts featuring ‘gift’

Piecing a future

Designer Cassandra Ellis contacted me recently to tell me about the gorgeous heirloom quality quilts she makes. She works with couples to create bespoke quilts by taking fabric and clothing from them both and weaving it together with other carefully selected fabrics. The process is representative of the way two stories and two pasts get woven together by a marriage.

She says “The key to creating these heirlooms, is understanding what connects the couples head and heart – their favourite colours and memories, their home and history, and what’s important to them in life. It’s really exciting and very rewarding”.

Her gorgeous quilts are often commissioned as a replacement for all or part of the traditional wedding list, as a special gift for the happy couple, or even by the couple themselves. They would make such a lovely addition to the home…

Quilted portraits

If you commissioned a quilt to be made before the wedding you could even incorporate it into your big day. These beautiful images from Kate and James’ wedding found on The Knotty Bride show how the use of a stunningly crafted quilt can make for perfect portraits…

I adore the fabric hearts too!

Cassandra also sells a range of her gorgeous products in her shop; good news for those of us not getting married!

Papercut presents

If you’ve been reading this blog a while you may have learnt of my penchant for paper. Not just plain paper in its boring flat form but paper art. And today I have got some amazing paper art to share with you that can be used in so many ways relating to your wedding. Taking just a piece of paper and a scalpel, London-based artist, Julene makes hundreds of intricate cuts to create her artwork. Her illustration style in itself is impressive but by turning it into a paper cut piece rather than a flat print it creates something much more tangible and incredible… I also love how she photographs her work with all the spare bits by the side!

So what could you use these paper cuts for?

1. A proposal

I know I’d be impressed if my man went for a proposal such as this one:

2. Save the date

You could use these pretty paper cuts to announce your wedding date:

3. Invitations

Or have one as the invitation itself. You could either have laser cut invitations made by Julene or photograph/scan a one-off piece that you could then also frame as artwork for yourself:

4. Table numbers

The paper theme could be taken through to your actual event with intricate table numbers:

5. Wedding gift

These pieces would make superb gifts for a wedding either for your partner or to buy for a happy couple:

6. Anniversary

And you probably couldn’t get a more perfect present for your first anniversary which, of course, is paper!

And they’re just the wedding ideas! You could commission a completely customisable piece from Julene for any occasion such as a new baby, a birthday, to celebrate a new home or just because you want a piece of gorgeous artwork to hang on your wall. They can be based on whatever you want too including motifs that have meaning or song lyrics that you love. Commissions cost £230 for A4 and £330 for A3 but there are also some limitied edition laser-cut pieces in Julene’s Etsy shop. Head on over to her website where you will see so many more amazing examples. I wish I could have shown them all!

Fan of photobooks

If you’ve hired a professional photographer for your wedding day you’ll have the opportunity to receive a beautiful album full of professional images. But what about all your friends and family that can’t afford an album or all the unprofessional, but still important, images your friends captured of your day?

This is when a company such as Photobox can be used to provide you with many more memories of your special day.

A printed present

I’ve used Photobox for years now for making photo albums of my holidays. In a digital age it’s very rare we print our pictures. In fact featuring special occasions in photo books is the only time I see my images in print!

I want to share with you a photo book I created for my friend Michelle and her husband Nick’s anniversary. When they hired a photographer for their wedding day their budget didn’t stretch to the photographer being there to capture the first dance or the drunken antics of their guests! So it was down to friends and family to capture these moments.

For their anniversary present I decided to gather these images up, as well as images of the hen and stag dos, and put them into a photo book.

Cover

Select a style

The process is pretty simple. Choose your style of book, they vary in cover styles and prices…

Sizes-&-styles

Upload all your images and you’re away!

A user interface allows you to select the layout of each page then you can drag and drop your images into the spaces provided and add text if you want to provide info on the image or if witty captions is your thing! You can also zoom in on an image if you want a closer crop (or out again if you change your mind) and a smiley green face will tell you if the image is good enough quality. If the face looks orange and unsure or red and sad then better to choose a different photo!

Extra pages can be added and pages swapped around if you want to change the order too and there are even multiple colours and designs of pages for you to choose from.

User-interface

Making montages

For Michelle’s book I even created my own montages offline (making sure they were the same size as the page) and uploaded them as one big image, so if you’re handy with photo editing packages you can be even more creative.

Montage

Plus, I uploaded an image that wasn’t even a photo but instead some text and the graphic I had created for Michelle & Nick’s stationery suite.

Butterfly-page

I’m happy to say they loved their gift especially as the majority of images in it were taken after the photographer left and I also included the slightly sillier ones that wouldn’t have suited their fancy, traditional wedding album!

Pages

For family & friends

Those that buy a CD of images from their photographer could create a photo book full of professional images for friends and family. The photo books are saved too so if someone comes to you at a later date wanting one it is just a few clicks to purchase another.

Image ideas

Photo books aren’t just fantastic for wedding photos and holiday snaps you can use them for all sorts of things. I recently created a mini book in place of a birthday card for my brother’s 30th, with each page being a different year of his life. The A3 coffee table books would be amazing for budding photographers to put together an album of their images. You could even use photo books as portfolios! And Photobox don’t just do photo books! They make all sorts of gifts for you to add your images to. A few examples of which are here…

Products

If you hurry you’ll have enough time to create personalised and precious photo creations for your loved ones this Christmas. In my opinion a gift of memories is one of the very best gifts you can give.
