What better destination for a honeymoon than the city of love… Paris. And if you’re going to do it why not do it in style by staying in the unique

But my favourite part? It has to be the floating bed with twinkling stars…

A Martha marriage

It’s getting cold. Really cold. So let’s all look at pictures of warm sunny places and wish we were there! Today’s post is on destination weddings, and not just any destination weddings but Martha Stewart designed weddings! I love Martha Stewart, well, her and the huge team of crafters she must have helping her! The Martha Stewart website is full of gorgeous ideas to make and bake for every occasion. Plus everything is beautifully displayed and photographed so it’s a real treat to look at. The Martha Stewart website alone is enough to make me yearn for an American style house with a wrap around porch, purely so I can fill it with extremely creative pumpkins come Halloween time.

So, combine Martha Stewart and destination weddings and the result is a destination wedding that totally stands out in terms of style. The collaboration with luxury vacation provider Sandals has resulted in 6 themed weddings that can take place in various tropical locations…

Beautiful beginnings

The Beautiful Beginnings wedding helps you celebrate your special day with elegance and simplicity. It includes a sweet magenta dendrobium orchid bouquet and boutonniere, as well as a table for four with crisp linens, a lovely centerpiece, and a charming white cake. It’s the perfect choice for an intimate and memorable occasion.

Beautiful-beginnings

Chances are you’ll want more than two guests at your wedding but the wedding is easily customisable to include more guests. The Beautiful Beginnings theme is included in a 7 night or more stay and so book your honeymoon here and the wedding’s for free!

Flutter of Romance

Create a day filled with joyful romance and a playful spirit when you choose the Flutter of Romance wedding. Pretty butterflies add a touch of whimsy to menus and place cards, and they also top the pale pink cake or round mini-cakes for a look that’s charming and sweet. The bridal bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpieces are made up of pink and fuchsia roses and magenta orchids that coordinate beautifully with the rest of the décor.

You have the choice of an elegant white cake or cupcakes, both decorated with doily accents. White pillar candles wrapped in eyelet fabric cast a soft, romantic glow over the reception table for an exquisite setting you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Beside the seaside

Really beautiful weddings; I’m particularly fond of the Vision in White theme, it’s so elegant. Whilst picking a package wedding does kind of go against having a unique wedding I still like them because they’re just so beautiful! Plus, if the wedding for you is a stress free one then these are perfect; enjoy your holiday at the same location and there’s really very little to organise!

Head over to the website for all the details on these delightful destination big days that will see you celebrating beside the seaside.

Beautiful Bled

Slovenia is stunning. I’m ashamed to admit I had no idea that Slovenia was so beautiful. It was only a chance encounter with an episode of A Place in the Sun that led to me, and the boy Adam, holidaying there at the end of August! I fell in love with Lake Bled with its backdrop of mountains, a castle perched on a lakeside cliff and a totally charming church sat on a tiny island in the middle of the water. So much so that I had to visit…

City stay

We arrived late to Slovenia so I’d arranged a one night stay in the capital Ljubljana (which I still can’t pronounce). Luckily our visit fell during a festival and the Old Town was packed full of stalls, live bands and people. The next day we wandered around the Old Town’s markets, looked at the beautiful buildings and I discovered the more-modern alternative to etching you & your loved one’s names on a tree: permanent marker on a padlock!

Ljubljana

Cold camping

We then moved on to our main holiday destination: the campsite situated right by Lake Bled. Pitching our tent in the pouring rain on ground that was pretty much rock and realising we’d left a sleeping bag on the bus wasn’t the greatest start (after three extremely cold nights attempting to share a sleeping bag we admitted defeat and bought a blanket which made things a little better)! The sun did make an appearance for three days of our holiday though and we made the most of it!

Camping

Emerald Adventure

First up was the Emerald River Adventure with three other couples from Scotland, Sweden and Australia. An eight hour tour including lakes, mountains, waterfalls, white water rafting on the Soca river, the opportunity to jump off a 12 metre high bridge into freezing water if you wished (I didn’t) and ended with a car train ride and a can of beer:

Wood with a view

On another glorious day we trekked through the woods to Osojnica viewpoint: a great way to admire Lake Bled. It offers a breathtaking view and one that had me repeatedly stating how amazing it was…

Osojnica

Charming church

A walk around the lake is lovely with several spots offering pletna (boat) trips to the island or you can hire your own rowboat (which we did) to visit the tiny Queen Mary’s church. For €3 you can go inside and ring the wishing bell. How lovely would it be to get married there?!

Church

And you can! I checked! So if you’re looking for a unique location for a destination wedding then you should definitely consider a wedding at Queen Mary’s church.

Toboggans & turrets

A ride (or two or three) on the summer toboggan is another must in Bled. And a visit to the castle is well worth it too. My Mum’s a (big) wine fan and so for her souvenir I bottled some Bled Castle white wine. I poured it, corked it, dipped the top in wax and sealed it with a stamped crest. There was also a printing studio that, being a letterpress lover, I adored! Wouldn’t mind a print studio in a castle turret myself, thank you!

Castle

Bled makes for a really romantic getaway, so, for those of you who don’t go for the destination wedding option, it would be perfect for a honeymoon destination (I’d perhaps trade in the tent though!)

Ice & igloos

Every since I can remember I’ve wanted to witness the Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis if you prefer). I’m a big fan of sky, it always amazes me: sunrises, sunsets, clouds, stars… so dancing coloured light up above is definitely on my must-see list.

And I’d quite like to cram in a lot of other experiences whilst I’m there which is why I haven’t gone yet. I’m saving up so I can have the husky ride and the igloo stay all at the same time!

So I’ve had my eye on the following holiday destination in Finland for several years now! And because it would make a great honeymoon or even a unique wedding destination I’ve decided to share it with you.

Awesome accommodation

There are a few ice chapels dotted about Scandinavia but I’ve picked Hotel Kakslauttanen because of the awesome choice of sleeping arrangement!

There are forty log cabins, each equipped with your very own sauna:

Five of which are a little more luxurious including a hot tub:

Queen cabin

And a honeymoon chamber with a star studded bathroom, the North Pole Star being right above the tub!

Or, for the more adventurous, there are real snow igloos to sleep in!

Snow igloo

And then there’s my favourite: glass igloos! The glass roofs would let you lay as newlyweds gazing at the stars and the dancing colours in the sky. How romantic?!

Glass igloo

If you can’t choose between these options then don’t! Spend a night or two in each!

Amazing activities

This place is great for a honeymoon destination (or holiday) because there are so many activities to enjoy.

You can go on a safari with your choice of transport: huskies, reindeers, atop a snowmobile or even aboard the world’s only tourist icebreaker boat!

Safaris

You could go ice fishing, ice swimming or carve ice:

Ice carving, swimming & fishing

Or for the sporty types there’s cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice karting and trekking in snow shoes:

Winter sports

If you wanted to go further afield there are lots of excursions on offer too. There’s so much to choose from you will definitely have a unique and memorable honeymoon!

Wine & dine

There are also four different restaurants to choose from and, again, I would recommend trying them all during your stay!

Truly white wedding

And if you wanted to get married in this magical destination?

Then there’s this beautiful ice chapel. I’m always amazed by ice carving (on that note check out these photos of the amazing Harbin Ice Festival. Off subject but wow!) I don’t think you could get a much more unique ceremony venue than one made completely from snow and ice!

It would only really work for a smaller guest list though and the ice chapel isn’t there all year round due to the sun and the melting effects it has! So it’s worth checking when would be best to book your truly white wedding. Hotel Kakslauttanen not only provide the wedding package and rental of the chapel of your choice but they can also provide all those extra details such as flowers, a photographer and cake. You can even get a reindeer sleigh ride to your wedding! Bit different to the usual horse and carriage!

Under the summer sun

I should mention it isn’t just a winter destination. For a summer or autumn wedding there is also a wooden chapel or you could choose to get married by a crystal clear stream, on mysterious island Ukonkivi or under the midnight sun atop Kaunispää mountain! The area is lovely for hiking and biking in the summer too. But I would just prefer to go in the winter when there’s a chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

And it is just ‘a chance’ too as seeing the Aurora Borealis is a phenomenon that can never be guaranteed as many factors need to be taken into account such as magnetic activity, position of the sun and cloudiness of the sky. But this place is beautiful as it is and the fact that there is no definite chance you’ll see them will just make it all the more magical if you’re lucky enough to!

P.S. Those with children please be aware that Santa lives here year round. You can go and visit his house and be served hot drinks and ginger biscuits. In the winter you (or more so your children) can tell Santa what they would like for Christmas and enjoy a spot of sledging. And in summer they can pan for treasure with The Gold Elves : )
