‘Honeymoons’ posts

Honeymoon idea : Locanda Rosa Rosae

I’ve decided, for the next few weeks at least, that I’m not going to be posting features from Friday through to Sunday. It’s summer, a lot’s going on, my Mum’s arriving next Tuesday for three weeks (yay!) and I’m also working on a project that is demanding a lot of my free time (which I’ll be sure to share when it’s finished!) Rather than struggle to post something every week day during these hectic times I’ve just decided to cut back. I’m sure you lot are busy with your own summer fun too and won’t miss me on a Friday that much anyway ;)

Loving Locanda

For today’s post I indulged in a passion of mine which is to drool over amazing hotels and daydream that one day I’ll get to go there. I had to share this particular one with you you. To me, rustic = romantic. This stunning converted mill near Treviso, Italy would make for a perfect honeymoon destination. Even it’s name, Locanda Rosa Rosae, is lovely. But what will really sell it are the pictures…

Oooo nice yes? :)

Honeymoon idea : New Zealand

It’s that time again. The time to dream about places far away; locations that would make ideal honeymoon destinations and that are captured by a photographer that’s visited. This time the photographer is the fab Jacqui McSweeney and the images are of two locations in New Zealand. Get ready for lots of gorgeous sand, sea and sky shots…

Raglan and The Coromandel

New-Zealand

There are two main areas in these photographs, the first place we traveled to from our base in Auckland was Raglan, 2 hrs drive south west of the city. We were lucky enough to stay with friends at their Bach (a Kiwi wooden holiday home) and we slept in the sleepout which is basically a cute little shed with beds in it. This was my first glimpse of the New Zealand countryside and beaches and it exceeded every expectation I had.

New-Zealand

We were staying a good hours drive from Raglan but we made our way there everyday on our friends boat, what a glorious way to travel. The other main area we went to is The Coromandel where we travelled all around. This area is stunning and we stayed in campsites surrounded by forest and amazing coastline through to amazing inland sites where we swam in mountain rivers.

New-Zealand

If it’s romance and relaxation your looking for than New Zealand is perfect. I loved every minute of my time there and can’t wait to go back this year as I’m planning on basing myself there for our winter months and am currently taking wedding bookings.

Honeymoon idea : Ericeira

Kerry is a photographer, traveller, artist… and dogwalker. She’s the co-owner of Piteira Photography, the other owner being her husband, and has kindly shared some info and images on the town where she lives. The images not only show what an amazing honeymoon destination Ericeira would make but also what an amazing photographer Kerry is. Enjoy these beautiful images and dream of beautiful beaches…

Ericeira Map

Although I am originally from Cape Town, South Africa, I have been living in Ericeira, Portugal for the last 2 years and I have to say quite honestly that this place stole my heart the minute I arrived.

Perhaps it’s because of the similarlties to my home town… right on the ocean, surrounded by dramatic natural landscapes, Ericeira is a laid-back surfer town just north of the capital city, Lisbon… far enough away to feel like you’re on holiday all the time but not so far that you can’t take an easy trip to the big city.

Ericeira was always best known as a fishing and holiday town famous for its top quality seafood and excellent restaurants. Then, in the mid 1970′s an American surf magazine published an article about the newly “discovered” Portuguese west coast and propelled the small town into the international spotlight. Within a few years European and international surf contests were being hosted here and this small town quickly became recognised as one of the best surf destinations in Europe.

What to do

With 11 different surf spots to choose from, Ericeira caters to surfers of all levels and abilities, beginner and super-experienced, there are waves for everyone. If your idea of the perfect honeymoon involves less activity and more leisure, there are plenty of stunning beaches to choose from, all with restaurants and change-room facilities and most within walking distance of the town centre.

Kerry-Murray-Ericeira

And if (like me) you judge a country by the quality of food on offer, then Portugal is your kind of place… The Portuguese take good food very seriously and are known to drive for hours to a region where a particular dish or type of cuisine is famous. Ericeira is no exception and over the summer weekends the seafood restaurants are full of locals and families from Lisbon (and beyond) who come for the crab and lobster dishes that the region is famous for. The choices available are almost endless, varying from gourmet to take-away, family friendly to super fancy, mostly local but also a growing number of international cuisine restaurants.

Where to stay

Accomodation is plentiful, also, ranging from 5-star down to camping and everything in between, but it is advisable to book ahead as this is a very popular summer holiday destination and finding a place to stay in the last minute is nearly impossible.

Kerry-Murray-Ericeira

English is widely spoken, people are friendly and welcoming, and your value for money is generally better than many other European countries… if I didn’t already live here this town would definitely be top of my list of continental holiday destinations!

Honeymoon idea : Log cabin in The Lakes

Although this post is titled with “honeymoon idea”, these pictures aren’t from a honeymoon. They’re actually from a mini holiday I took a few months ago. The reason I’m sharing this gorgeous cabin with you today is because I think it would make an affordable and adorable honeymoon destination.

Damson Cabin

Map

Located just outside of Ulverston, Cumbria there are two beautiful Newland Valley Lodges both featuring two double bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen, dining area, living area with log burner and a deck to enjoy a glass (or several) of wine in the sun. They’re completely cosy and made with big fat logs which I love; beats the wood panelled cabins any day ;) From the outside these cabins actually look really rather tiny but once you step inside the space and the high ceiling is impressive.

With luxurious finishes such as chandeliers and a claw-foot tub set against the wood grain they’re the perfect combination of rustic cosy and luxury honeymoon. I spent the first hour excitedly taking pictures and taking mental notes for the future of how to build one just like it :)

Damson-Cabin

What to do

Anybody that’s been to the Lake District will know there is a ton of stuff to do. And anybody that hasn’t been really should go. It’s one of my favourite places in England with beautiful scenery, plenty of walks to do and activities to keep the adventurous happy. There’s also the more peaceful excursions like boat rides on lakes and visiting Beatrix Potter’s House and stopping off in Grasmere to get the famous gingerbread. Mmmmm :p

Aside from all that though is the cabin. You could quite easily stock up on good food, good wine, good movies and just stay in the cabin for a few days. It would be a perfectly romantic honeymoon break; just the two of you with all the wedding stress a thing of the past and a log fire to keep you warm as you chat about your future late into the night :)

Honeymoon idea : Isle of Skye

I have another fabulous in-depth and informative honeymoon post for you today. With images provided by the honeymooner, and photographer, Lucy Stendall and another photographer Lynne Kennedy. Lynne captured adorable images of Lucy and her husband Tom, at the beginning of their marriage together, looking so very much in love…

Tom and I were married in August 2010 at home and we honeymooned on the Isle of Skye.

Originally, like many couples, we contemplated the thoughts of warmer climes for our honeymoon, maybe somewhere with a beach and some history… and we filled our heads with the idea of Morocco. We whiled away the hours on i-escape and thought of the exotic adventures we would have. Then I found out it was Ramadan and we heard that this would write off any daytime public displays of affection… and, well, that seemed a bit of a non starter for a honeymoon! So we have shelved that trip for another time instead.

We went back to the drawing board and both mooted the idea of Scotland. I suppose it came to mind because it’s somewhere we’d been saying we’d visit for a while but the highlands and islands are just so far away from us we had never seriously thought of it as a viable holiday destination before. We always found a reason not to go that far north. After all, to get there we would be passing through Yorkshire and the Lake District which are both great places for UK holidays.

But with 2 whole weeks ahead of us and a special reason for the trip we decided to go that extra {thousand or so} miles and take a trip to the Isle of Skye. The thing that sealed the deal was partly the fact it would be an adventure for both of us as neither of us had been there before – and also we love the outdoors and couldn’t wait to see that stunning scenery for ourselves. There was also the thought of all the magnificent roads Tom had spied on Top Gear. You see, Tom’s other love, his sports car, would be coming along for the drive.

So this is how we ended up on a 10 hour road trip to Skye with 2 weeks worth of honeymoon wardrobe crammed into the nooks and crannies of our tiny car emblazoned with our Just Married sign. We felt very much the newlyweds, with people tooting us and children waving at us on our way. It felt lovely and old fashioned… and I could take my bouquet with me which was a bonus!

Where to stay

Whilst in the area we stayed at these fabulous places:

Ashtree House Hotel: the perfect stop to break the long journey on the way to and from Skye.
Balmacara Mains is just off Skye in a small hamlet near to Kyle of Lochalsh.
The Spoons: luxurious gastro B&B located to the north of the island with possibly the prettiest presented poached egg I have ever seen.
Tigh Dubh (pronounced “tie doo”): a traditional and homely rustic croft.

A honeymoon shoot

We also hired a local photographer, Lynne Kennedy, whilst we were there for some portraits. I found Lynne through some elopement photographs she had put on her blog. This is really a speciality of hers and her photography is beautiful. Honeymoon photography is a brilliant idea for capturing all the newlywed bliss without any of the pressures of an actual wedding day. Not only does Lynne have a huge talent and enthusiasm about her craft she is just a genuinely kind and funny person.

A highlight of the shoot was when she saw an opportunity for a photo of us on the wall of a small bridge and boldly announced “Right, I’m going in!” before marching into the river below the bridge, soaking her trainers and jeans right through in the process – this is a lady who will stop at nothing in search of the perfect composition. Lynne’s passion for photography is infectious and she became one of the people who encouraged me to go for it with my own wedding and portrait photography business, which I set up in Autumn last year.

When the Mister and I weren’t gallavanting around having our pictures taken(!) or indulging in the new found delights of the extraordinarily deep bathtub at the Spoons we journeyed around the different parts of the island and the surrounding area…

What to do

A whisky tasting tour at Talisker, the island’s only distillery – this included a round table tasting of several whiskeys and lots of banter with a handful of others.
Claigan Coral beach near to Dunvegan Castle.
Armadale Castle.
SkyeSkins – yup all our family got sheepskin rugs for christmas last year!
Edinbane pottery.
Dolphin/whale/shark spotting at Neist Point- we saw a family of basking sharks and I did my crazy excited face!
The road to Applecross – if you or your other half like roads, this one will scare and exhilarate you in equal measure. Plus, there’s a lovely pub by the water when you get to the other end.
Walks around the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing.

Good grubberies

We are total foodies and the restaurants on Skye did not disappoint. It’s a gourmand’s dream. Highlights included…
A ridiculously extravagant birthday meal at the Michelin starred Kinloch Lodge
A gastronomique meal at the renowned Three Chimneys Restaurant
We didn’t have one bad meal whilst we were on honeymoon which is certainly saying something and we’d also recommend…
Red Skye Restaurant
Greshornish House Hotel
Harbour View
Loch Bay
Plockton Shores

Yes, we ate pretty, pretty well whilst we were there.

A honeymoon close to home

Honeymooning in the UK is vastly underrated. I think in part this is because of the compromise on the weather. But in certain places, like the Scottish highlands and Islands I don’t think the weather matters as much. I know, I know, you’re probably looking at these photographs and thinking it’s ok for me to say that – as you can see we were ridiculously lucky with the weather! Having said that we were fully expecting misty moody weather and that wouldn’t have stopped us from enjoying anything the island has to offer. In fact, I’m imagining it would be just as romantic to tootle around in the mist all wrapped up cosy and warm as to bomb around with the roof down soaking in the rays.

UK Honeymoons are not always great budget options especially if you share our love of boutique places to stay and eat. We were very lucky in that our guests treated us to our honeymoon and the quality of the accommodation, hospitality and food we enjoyed would take some beating. And the scenery? Unforgettable. The Isle of Skye was a gorgeous newlywed adventure and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for the perfect UK honeymoon or elopement/wedding destination. I for one can’t wait to return.
