DIY : Paper garlands

I wanted to pop a simple DIY tutorial on the blog that I used for a recent 35th anniversary party (I’ll share the party pics soon). The prep (punching paper) takes a little work but it’s something you can do in front of the telly and the finished results are so cute.

What you need:

Coloured/patterned paper of your choice
Circular paper punch
Thread
Sewing machine

What you do:

Punch out lots of circles! You can do them in different sizes and pick colours/patterns that complement the style of your wedding. I included maps from Algonquin Park in my garlands as the party couple had spent many camping trips there.

Next, stitch them all together. It’s best to stitch down the middle but you don’t have to be too precise. To make the stitching quicker have your circles in a pile, next to the sewing machine, in the order you want to stitch them. Then, as you stitch, grab the next circle and continuously feed the machine with circles until they’re all gone. If you get into a rhythm it doesn’t take as long as you’d expect.

Paper-garlands

Admire your pretty paper garlands :) And then wrap them up carefully until you want to hang them. I wrapped them around toilet roll tubes and placed them in sandwich bags. You can untangle them if they get tangled but it can be a little time consuming so I’d try to avoid it!

Hang them around your venue. You could use loose threads at either end to hang them but, as I thought that would be a little fiddly, I punched a hole in either end and used string to tie them to trees…

These don’t cost a fortune, are simple to make and look really pretty. Perfect!

A pom-pom path

It seems that this blog has affected my brain as I find myself “thinking wedding” all the time now. So when I saw these pictures…

Rugs

… I didn’t think “ooo what a lovely-looking rug to brighten up a room” I instantly thought “how incredibly cool would it be to have this as your wedding-day aisle?!”

Very cool is the answer.

Milk & lace

You don’t need elaborate, expensive flowers for your wedding. Instead an empty milk bottle, some lace, a few buttons, wool and supermarket bought flowers will do just fine! In fact I think they look rather pretty and are great for those on a budget or if you fancy something with a hand-crafted feel.

How to make …

  • Wrap your lace round a milk bottle (or any glass vessel you choose) and cut it to size making sure there’s an overlap.
  • Decide on the position of your buttons; have as many as you like in any colours you fancy… get creative!
  • Stitch on with wool and tie the ends at the back.
  • Wrap your decorated lace round the glass and stitch in place, it doesn’t need to be particular neat, the rough ends just add a lovely hand-crafted quality.
  • Add water & flowers. A bunch of supermarket flowers for £3-4 could probably fill three or four vases or lots more if you opt for a single stem in a vase.

In total this project cost less than £3 and I even got to enjoy a large milkshake after my (not very) hard work :)

Crocheted love

I’ve recently discovered crochet. I say recently, I’ve actually made various attempts over the years but finally gave it a proper good go and completed an octopus last week! I have since bought lots of wool and intend to make a whole menagerie of cute crocheted animals.

With crochet firmly on the brain recently I loved these next hearts that I came across on Etsy and know they would look so adorable incorporated into your wedding…

Sweet centrepieces

I love the idea of crocheted hearts in bowls or just strewn across the table. You could even buy lots and have them surround you on the floor whilst you say your vows (I’m thinking non-church wedding here by the way); they’d look so cute on the photos! The hearts on sticks make a fab alternative to flowers as a centrepiece too…

Heart garlands

And to complement those hearts how about making crocheted heart garlands. You don’t have to do the crocheting bit just buy ready-crocheted ones, thread yarn through them and string them around your venue. Lovely!

DIY

Of course if you’re handy with a crochet hook you can make these yourself. Here are a few tutorials that may take your fancy:

I attempted the itty bitty tutorial but as someone very new to the world of crochet, who’s just learnt how to sufficiently hold the wool to crochet, that magic ring is just way too complicated!

3D photo booth!

Today I have an idea to take your wedding photo booth one step further… use a 3D camera! Don’t worry, as I’m not suggesting some fancy pants gadget that you have to pay a fortune for. Actually you can make your own and it can look something like this…

3D-Camera

OK, so it’s not going to be the best looking detail at your wedding but it takes 3D pictures, and that’s amazing!

How it works…

As our eyes are spaced apart they see images from slightly different angles; when these two images are merged we see the finished picture and this gives us a sense of depth. Create a camera that takes two images at a similar space apart to your eyes, merge these, and you have the same effect! It’s know as stereoscopy.

What you get…

One way to view the resulting image is going to take you back to the 90s and the days of Magic Eye! Those books that were amazing if you could see the 3D image but insanely frustrating if you couldn’t! I could never see them by the recommended method of putting the book up to your face and pulling it slowly back, the only way I could get it to work was to cross my eyes and then relax them a little and then it appeared but the picture always went inwards rather than out! Anyway, because of my method for Magic Eye I can actually see these 3D images as the technique is to cross your eyes. Once you’ve crossed them you should see three images and then you have to focus on the centre image.

It may be a little tricky, and rather weird, at first but keep trying because it’s ace when you finally see it…

And if you can’t see it then don’t worry because you can still take 3D images and then buy a stereoscope such as this to view the images with.

You can also make animated gifs of your 3D images that wiggle for you! To see how to make these and for the step-by-step instructions on how to make a 3D camera just head to this post over at the fantastic Photojojo.

Great guestbook

I really like the idea of having a guest book filled with 3D images of your friends and a plastic stereoscope tied to it with twine. Guest books will be so much fun to look at after years have passed anyway but having the novelty effect of 3D thrown in is sure to make you smile.

Come back in a few hours as I found a lovely wedding that uses the 3D camera idea. And it looks a little less DIY than the one above just in case you fancy something fancier!
