Kerry is a photographer, traveller, artist… and dogwalker. She’s the co-owner of Piteira Photography, the other owner being her husband, and has kindly shared some info and images on the town where she lives. The images not only show what an amazing honeymoon destination Ericeira would make but also what an amazing photographer Kerry is. Enjoy these beautiful images and dream of beautiful beaches…
Although I am originally from Cape Town, South Africa, I have been living in Ericeira, Portugal for the last 2 years and I have to say quite honestly that this place stole my heart the minute I arrived.
Perhaps it’s because of the similarlties to my home town… right on the ocean, surrounded by dramatic natural landscapes, Ericeira is a laid-back surfer town just north of the capital city, Lisbon… far enough away to feel like you’re on holiday all the time but not so far that you can’t take an easy trip to the big city.
Ericeira was always best known as a fishing and holiday town famous for its top quality seafood and excellent restaurants. Then, in the mid 1970′s an American surf magazine published an article about the newly “discovered” Portuguese west coast and propelled the small town into the international spotlight. Within a few years European and international surf contests were being hosted here and this small town quickly became recognised as one of the best surf destinations in Europe.
What to do
With 11 different surf spots to choose from, Ericeira caters to surfers of all levels and abilities, beginner and super-experienced, there are waves for everyone. If your idea of the perfect honeymoon involves less activity and more leisure, there are plenty of stunning beaches to choose from, all with restaurants and change-room facilities and most within walking distance of the town centre.
And if (like me) you judge a country by the quality of food on offer, then Portugal is your kind of place… The Portuguese take good food very seriously and are known to drive for hours to a region where a particular dish or type of cuisine is famous. Ericeira is no exception and over the summer weekends the seafood restaurants are full of locals and families from Lisbon (and beyond) who come for the crab and lobster dishes that the region is famous for. The choices available are almost endless, varying from gourmet to take-away, family friendly to super fancy, mostly local but also a growing number of international cuisine restaurants.
Where to stay
Accomodation is plentiful, also, ranging from 5-star down to camping and everything in between, but it is advisable to book ahead as this is a very popular summer holiday destination and finding a place to stay in the last minute is nearly impossible.
English is widely spoken, people are friendly and welcoming, and your value for money is generally better than many other European countries… if I didn’t already live here this town would definitely be top of my list of continental holiday destinations!
