TK Maxx Wedding Bloggers' Challenge

I was surprised and excited when an email landed in my inbox asking me to take part in the TK Maxx Wedding Bloggers’ Challenge: to accessorise one dress to create a wedding guest outfit suitable for 5 different types of wedding.

I was surprised for two reasons: one, it amazed me that a big company even knew of my blog and wanted me to take part! And two, because I would never call myself fashionable! I’ve always been the type that if it looks nice on me and it suits the event I’m going to then I’ll wear it regardless of if it’s ‘fashionable’ or not.

I’m not the type that can only wear an outfit once and has a whole new wardrobe with each passing trend, I just can’t afford it!

So I was a little nervous about accepting the challenge as it is something I’ve never done before. But then I thought about the challenge and realised that most wedding guests wouldn’t be amazing fashionistas either. They’d be like me just wanting to wear something that looked nice and that when wearing it wouldnt feel out of place at the event they were invited to. And so I think (hope) that’s what I achieved. All of the looks I created I would wear and believe suit the event they were created for. Fashion is subjective though so I’m sure not everybody would want to wear these outfits. I just hope, either way, you enjoy looking at what I came up with!

Black tie

This was probably the hardest as, being a girl born and bred in Blackburn, I don’t get invited to many any Black Tie events! Also, as I’d decided on a grey theme for my city outfit, I knew I had to differentiate them somehow. And so it came down to adding the glitz and glamour that I believe you’d find at a black tie event!

Black-tie

Alternative

Perhaps I’m stereotyping, but say alternative to me and I instantly think of rock chick, and that generally leads me on to black. So that’s what I chose to go with here. The dress is rather pretty for the rock look but I think with some fun accessories and by echoing the coral in the so-cool shoes it becomes a pretty original, or alternative, look:

Alternative

Country

My first thought about the country look was ‘cowboy boots won’t go with that dress!’ as I had visions of full on farm affairs with muddy fields where boots or wellies would be needed. Then I realised that a country wedding could just as easily be a lovely garden party and so I went with a pretty, romantic, summery look:

Country

City

I struggled with thinking of what colours would go with a white and coral polka-dot dress and so stuck to metallics and neutral colours: black, white and grey. To make this look differ from the Black Tie outfit I picked less glitz and went for pieces that were very contemporary with a statement piece of jewellery to add to the modern look:

Beach

This is probably my favourite look as I’d love the chance to go to a beach wedding wearing a pretty dress and comfortable flats shoes! I thought the sandals were a necessity for the beach but have picked gold to keep them dressy enough for a wedding (rubber flip flops just wouldn’t have cut it!):

Beach

There you have it! It wasn’t the easiest challenge as not only did I have to find items I thought went with the dress but I also wanted them on a white background to be able to arrange them how I did! It was fun though and something I may try again, just with dresses and themes I’ve picked myself to make it easier!

Thanks to TK Maxx for asking me to take part and, for those of you wanting to see what the other bloggers picked for their dresses, go check out the challenge on the TK Maxx Facebook page!

Saturday screening

Normally on a Saturday I link to other blogs I love but every other Saturday I thought it would be rather nice to share a wedding video with you instead. I’ve loved Elysium Productions, set up be Julie & Alex, ever since I came aross them on Jessica Claire’s blog years ago.

You know when you see montages set to music in films? Well I always wish there was this option for real life. They’re always done so well and, more often than not, make me cry! Apart from if you’re a celeb with ITV2 cameras following your every move then you won’t get to have a montage of your life set to music. However, a wedding video gives you the chance to have one (very important) day of your life captured just like in the movies and edited to make you cry (in a good way!) And that’s just what Elysium Productions do.

They’re based in Orange County but fly all over the world to capture couple’s wedding days! They’re yet to film in the UK though, which they’d love to do as Alex is actually from over here!

Understandably you’d need a healthy budget to have them film your wedding day here and so although they could be a potential vendor idea I’m showing you these videos more for you to just enjoy seeing how in love and happy these couples are (and perhaps steal a few wedding ideas along the way!)

This first wedding video I want to share is of Starr and Ross on the beautiful island of Anguilla and I am in love with her dress!

Japanese inspired

I feel I have to warn you up front that the following amazing dresses can’t be found at shops in the UK. But that’s not stopping you from having one. You’ll just have to factor in a trip to Sydney to be fitted for it!

Colourful couture

The reason I had to blog the following dresses? Because, rather than just the traditional white, these gowns come with a bold and beautiful splash of colour!

Culture Bridal Couture is a group of highly experienced couture seamstresses headed by owner Lisa Merton. Every couture gown they create is individually designed and custom-made for the bride. Due to this their website is full of gorgeous gowns in a range of styles (all well worth seeing) but it was those with a Japanese influence that stood out for me as something entirely different to what I’d seen before.

Lisa let me know that all the Japanese gowns are ‘made from real vintage kimonos and obis, so each piece I create is totally unique, as each vintage kimono and obi is also a one-off fabric…It’s a great way of using colour in wedding gowns, as the vintage kimonos, obis and rare textiles I buy from Japan are all so individual, and feature amazing and often unexpected colour palettes, quirky prints and diverse themes.’

The Japanese fabrics are then paired with beautiful silks to create the following stunning gowns:

I absolutely adore the dress directly above with the huge black bow. I’d love to see a Japanese-inspired wedding… A gown like these, parasols, paper lanterns, origami paper cranes made from Japanese papers hanging from the ceiling, sake and sushi and guests struggling with chopsticks… amazing!

Turning Japanese

And don’t think you have to be Asian to enjoy a Japanese wedding. As Lisa says ‘many of my brides that wear my Japanese designs are not actually Asian, but are just in love with all things Asian and in particular Japan. Sometimes a bride may be Australian and marrying her Asian groom, or vice versa, or one of the couple may have Asian heritage in their family.

Often both bride and groom are Australian but have some connection to Asia which they want to highlight in their wedding theme, or at least in the gown.’

And sometimes it’s simply because the ‘bride wants to wear colour!’

So perhaps you met in Japan or you had a great holiday there or you both enjoy Japanese films or you just think it would make a great looking wedding (it would) this is one theme that is certain to create a unique and memorable day!

Fitted fast

Normally a Culture Bridal Couture gown takes 4-6 months to make but they are willing to literally drop everything for an international bride flying to Australia especially to have her gown made by them. If a bride can visit for a month then one fitting a week is enough to ensure her dress is finished for her departure. Alternatively two visits for a period of at least a week each can also be arranged.

This fast service would mean Lisa along with her entire team would be working solely on the gown, overtime being factored in if necessary, to ensure the dress will be getting on the plane with the bride!

Shopping & sightseeing

Of course with these dresses being custom designed and made for you, plus having to factor in a trip to Australia, it won’t be the cheapest dress you could buy. But if you combine the fitting of your dress with a holiday or visiting friends and family you may have out there then it doesn’t seem as extravagant. And I’ve been to Australia and can certainly recommend it (Ramsay Street especially!)

Go down this route and you’ll be flying home having had an amazing holiday seeing some amazing sites with one stunning dress that a team of experts have put their time and effort into especially for you. That’s pretty special!
