The Granddaddy of getaways

I love boutique hotels. Especially when they have different themes from rooms. And even more so when the rooms are Airstream trailers on the rooftop! I imagine this doesn’t happen in many places. But it does at The Granddaddy in Cape Town and that’s why I’ve completely fallen in love with it! It’s going down on the list of ideal honeymoon/holiday destinations.

Boutique beautiful

The Granddaddy is a beautiful hotel with an amazing reception area and beautifully designed Showroom Café (generally anywhere that has Ghost chairs gets the thumbs up from me)…

Daddy Cool

And if you want a bar with bling then the Daddy Cool bar, with its metallic walls and gold mosaic bar, will certainly suit you…

Superior & stylish

The rooms are super-stylish with lampshades and headboards boasting South African place names, bolster cushions decorated in African-themed designs, beautiful silver & black globes and marble bathrooms…

Sugar Daddy

There are also two Sugar Daddy Suites that come with lovely lounges, wooden-decked patios and beautiful bathrooms…

Trailers sans trash

But, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be way more excited by the penthouse trailer park. Seven iconic American Airstream trailers sit around a decked area that transforms itself into the Pink Flamingo outdoor cinema on a weekly basis. The cinema offers drinks and your choice of popcorn, toffee apples or candy floss. There’s also a rooftop bar for entertainment on non-cinema nights…

Creative Capetown

The trailers themselves are amazing. Each being designed by a different Capetonian artist and featuring loads of great details I think these would be perfect for an exciting home for your honeymoon…

You & Your Wedding favourite!

I was really surprised and honoured to receive an email letting me know I’d been named one of You & Your Wedding’s 15 favourite blogs!

Check out the slideshow here. You’ll find me at number 10 but there’s another 14 amazing blogs featured, most of which I didn’t know about so I’m going to enjoy reading them myself!

Thanks to You & Your Wedding for liking my blog enough to feature it! Really does make me happy.

As does this…

Worn in wonderland

When I saw the following headpieces I had to feature them! They’re unlike anything I’ve seen and would be perfect for the bold bride daring to be different. Made by Zara Carpenter aka Chatham Girl in Kent, England they’re inspired by fantasy and fairytales and Alice in Wonderland-esque things…

There are beautiful oversized bows…

…flowers and feathers…

… the last being inspired by the bit in Alice in Wonderland when Alice discovers the Queen’s men painting the roses after they planted the wrong colour.

There are even hats featuring boats & beaches (love the lil’ hula girl in the tropical piece)…

And finally my absolute favourite…

Woodland wonderland

Please, please, please could a bride plan some magical woodland wonderland wedding, wear this hat and then send me the pictures? Would make me so happy!

Keeley & Lorenzo : 20-02-10 : London

This wedding isn’t full of unusual details. But it is classic, and beautiful, with a gorgeous wedding gown, a great choice of venues, an iconic landmark as a backdrop and superb photography by photojournalist Allister Freeman. And because of all that I’m so grateful I can share it with you…

The meeting

We were introduced by a mutual friend, Helena. We worked together and she set us up on a blind date because she thought it would be hilarious if I ended up with a rhyming name… ‘Keeley Vasini’!

The proposal

Lorenzo proposed on a weekend break to the Lake District. We stayed in Linthwaite House on Windermere and he popped the question after dinner in the hotel bar.

The wedding

Hair: My hair was done by Darren Regan from John Frieda: he is a very close friend. His lovely wife Benna coloured it (she also works at John Frieda).

Make-up: My friend and former colleague did my makeup (and the bridesmaids’ and my mum’s).

Flowers: All flowers were by Mcqueens.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Groom/groomsmen: Groom: Spencer Hart & Groomsmen: wore their own suits but we bought their ties from Cos!

Ceremony venue: The Guild Church of St Mary Aldermary, Watling Street, London.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Dress: Pronovias. I had the bolero jacket made at Annette Carey who makes bespoke pieces and dresses. Her boutique was just around the corner from our flat so I popped in one day on the off chance and she did a really good job!

Shoes: Louboutin.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Bridesmaids: Scarlet Poppy Bridal Design Studio in Leeds. They were by Jim Hjelm.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Reception venue: Le Pont de la Tour.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Food: Starter: Confit duck ravioli, Maderia consommé * Main: Dedham vale beef fillet, winter vegetable galette, pomme fondant & peppercorn sauce * Dessert: Warm chocolate nemesis cake & vanilla ice cream.

Cake: I got the cake from M&S! They were brilliant and it was such a tasty cake! McQueens dressed it with fresh flowers…

Favours: All hand made. 5 sugared almonds with bespoke stickers with our initials on: took me hours to make!

Keeley & Lorenzo

First dance to: You’re The Best Thing, Style Council.

Keeley & Lorenzo

Best bit of the day: The ceremony and walking down the aisle. I was so nervous before hand but fine when it got to that part, the excitement took over!

Groovybooths

Photography will be the most important aspect of my wedding planning. It’s something I’d set aside a good chunk of the budget for and something I will probably spend a long time over: torn between the different styles of photography and which photographer is right for me. After the memories fade the photos will be what’s left and when I’m an old woman I want to look back at photos that are as stunning as I remember the day being.

As well as the bride and groom I also think it’s important to capture those that shared your day. Although the photographer is likely to get photos of some of your guests it is unlikely they will have time to capture them all (unless you do those huge group shots but I’m not a fan of the overly staged).

Photo fun

This is why I love the idea of photo booths. Not only would you get images of all your guests (make sure you remind them to all go in!) you’ll also get them being more themselves and acting as you know them, as photo booths can be much less intimidating than a photographer’s camera.

Photo booths are great entertainment for your guests and give them a great reminder of the day. They could even be used instead of favours: just leave a note where you’d normally place the favour giving info on where the booth is.

Preferences & props

Groovybooths

Groovybooth seem to be one of the more affordable photo booth companies. You can choose between red, black, brushed steel, gold or even leopard print for your booth and pick a backdrop colour to your images of red, black, blue or green. There’s even a wind machine for those model-type shots! A box of props can be included full of silly hats and glasses for your guests to have fun with:

Groovybooth props

The booth takes four images a time that, in seconds, are printed on one sheet for your guests to take home. And the best part? The four images are different! Like the old school photo booths. I’m not a fan of those that just print the same picture four times when you only need one for your passport… no fun!

The area above and below the four images is also customisable to include your names and date of your wedding and for the creative amongst you artwork can fill this space rather than just text.

Groovybooth set of four

Guests (and of course the bride and groom) can visit the booth an unlimited amount of times during a four hour period: plenty of time to get everyone in there (perhaps more than once for those that love to pose!) The booths are fully set up for you and an attendant is on hand if any help is needed. There’s also a choice of black and white or colour before each set of images is taken.

Booth budget

After your wedding a web gallery is available where you can download the photos for free and all images are also put on a disc or USB stick for you. All of this comes in at £695 which I don’t think is too bad if you consider it entertainment for the guests and forego the favours if you’re on a tight budget. It is an additional £50 for a second print of all the images for the bride and groom but as I said before I think this is a great way to remember those who spent your special day with you.

Groovy guestbook

You could even place a guest book on a table next to your photo booth asking those that go in to write on one side of the book leaving you the other side free to stick in the corresponding images. And there you have it… great guestbook!
