Shopping vintage for your wedding day is extremely popular. But one problem that arises is finding your ideal dress at the ideal time. Most companies get hold of dresses when they can and sell them on as soon as a bride wants to buy. This means when they they’re sold, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever see them again. Unless the bride that bought decides to sell it on again… but by then it may a year or so later. So if you see a vintage wedding dress you love, my advice would be snap it up sharpish!
One highlight of wearing a vintage wedding dress is that they come with a story (or several). Even if you don’t know what that story is the idea that it has been worn by previous brides on one of the happiest days of their life definitely has a certain appeal.
But if you can forego the history of the dress and it’s more the look you’re after then check out The Vintage Wedding Dress Company.
Based in London, they do what other companies do: round up beautiful original vintage pieces to sell on to brides. But, to complement this, they have designed one vintage-inspired dress from each era from the 1920s right through to the 1970s. Ideal if there’s a particular era you have your eye on but you’re struggling to find an original piece! Their Decades collection is stunning and each dress comes with a whole load of customisable options: great for creating the perfect dress for you.
1920s
This dress features a dramatic plunging neckline and dropped waist. For those a little less daring (or think the neckline is too revealing for the church!) then an optional panel can be inserted. This is removable to take you from day (with panel) to night (without) if you so wish:
1930s
Featuring a cute crossover bodice and flattering bias-cut skirt in sexy silk satin, this is a great dress to add sleeves too for those that don’t like to show of their arms or just love the sleeve look! I love the simple chiffon sleeves. Ever so elegant.
1940s
The dramatic low draped back on this dress is stunning and complements the draping off the cowl neckline. With a range of sleeves available you’ll easily be able to create your ideal dress.
1950s
The 1950s dress is just dreamy. It has a soft full length tulle skirt for swishing down the aisle and a heart-shaped neckline for all the romantics amongst you. Add the scalloped lace hem or trim to this one and you have the perfect pretty number.
1960s
The high neckline and empire waistline results in a very elegant 1960s-inspired dress. The low back ensures this elegant number isn’t overly modest. This one really benefits from a sash to cinch in the waist and create a suitably sexy silhouette for your big day.
1970s
The 70s gown is all chiffon and softness. With spaghetti straps a ruched bodice and a beautfil long skirt this dress is perfect for a summery sunny affair. Team with a flower in the hair (and perhaps a twirl around the garden).
Adorable additions
All of these dresses can be teamed with a stunning silk sash or a cute corsage or both!
Beautiful and made to fit (which is often another problem with finding rare vintage pieces: they can require a lot of altering!)
The Vintage Wedding Dress Company is appointment only. But if it’s vintage you’re after then it’s well worth taking the time to arrange a visit. The price of the Decades dresses begin at £1250 with the original pieces starting at £950. With around fifty original pieces at any one time such as these…
